NOTE
How to Design a Monitoring System
What monitoring is, why microservices need it, and the three parts: logs, metrics, and tracing.
This is a historical learning note and may contain outdated or incomplete understanding.
1. What Is Monitoring
- Log monitoring (Log): collect logs from code in one place for unified querying and processing.
- Metric monitoring (Metrics): record the time and value of events to observe trends.
- Call-chain monitoring (Tracing): record the complete process of a request. It is used to see which nodes the request passed through and how much time each node consumed.
2. Why Monitoring Is Needed
A microservice architecture consists of many services cooperating to complete a request. Once an exception occurs, we need to quickly locate the service with the problem, which requires monitoring.
